A receipt (chitanta) is a document that serves as proof of a cash payment between two parties. In Romania, receipts are essential financial documents used to confirm that money has been received for goods, services, rent, loans, or other obligations. While bank transfers create their own digital trail, cash payments leave no automatic record — making a written receipt the only proof of payment. Without a receipt, the payer has no evidence that they fulfilled their financial obligation, which can lead to disputes or double-payment demands. Receipts are commonly used for rent payments, cash purchases, loan repayments between individuals, service payments, and any other situation where money changes hands without a bank intermediary. A properly drafted receipt protects both the payer and the recipient.
What must a legally valid receipt contain?
For a receipt to have legal value as proof of payment in Romania, it must include several essential elements: the document title (Chitanta), a unique sequential number, the date and place of issue, full identification of the person making the payment (name, CNP or tax code, address), full identification of the person receiving the payment, the exact amount received (in both figures and words to prevent alteration), the currency, a clear description of what the payment is for (rent for a specific month, sale of goods, loan repayment, etc.), and the handwritten signature of the person receiving the money.
